How to take GREAT PHOTOS of your pet
<meta charset=”utf-8″ />
Meet Cheeto. He’s a 17-pound, slow-moving, fast-talking cat with a supersonic meow (that he uses constantly). He loves to be pet and he’ll follow you wherever you go–that is, unless you’re holding a camera.
There’s nothing better than a great photo. It looks amazing hanging on your wall, and it makes you smile every time you see it. This is especially true when you take the photo yourself. Getting a great photo of your pet is particularly difficult considering they don’t usually have the patience to sit still for a few seconds; nevertheless for a whole photo session. So, after quite a bit of trial and error, I came up with these four easy-to-follow tips that will make all the difference.
Instructions
1
Turn off that Flash and Forget You Ever had it
Using a flash with pets? It causes red-eye with kids and closed eyes with pets, but we keep using the flash anyway. The flash casts a harsh light over whatever you’re shooting, and it also causes severe shadows, dark spots, and distortion in your photos. If the above photo of Cheeto was shot with the flash on, his entire face would’ve been obscured in shadow, and he likely would’ve closed his eyes. That would’ve made this just another run-of-the-mill pet photo. Turn off your flash and go find some softer light.
2
Light Matters!
Since you’re no longer using the Flash on your camera, this means the light conditions are going make the difference between a great, natural-looking photo with amazing detail, and a photo that’s too dark or too washed out to see. The photo of Cheeto (above) and Norget (below) were both taken in mid-day light, in an apartment building. Both photos were taken only a few strides away from the nearest window. My back was to the window when I took these photos.
The best light conditions usually occur in the early morning and early evening (think sunrise and just before sunset for outdoor photos), but if you’re indoors, you can take advantage of light control by lowering or raising your blinds and positioning your pet in well-lit areas. For indoor photos, I would recommend timing your photos when your home is best lit–the time of the day when you don’t have to turn on any lights is ideal.
It’s okay to turn on overhead lights, but shoot a few sample shots to make sure your lights aren’t casting a strange color. I prefer to use only natural light, as post-editing is usually minimized when natural light is used.
3
Your Camera Choice is Important
The reason we often just miss that perfect photo is because of the delay on digital cameras. Did you ever notice that when you hold down the button, it takes a couple seconds for the camera to go off? That’s because the camera is “thinking”, and this 2-second delay is the difference between a photo where everyone’s blinking and a great picture.
If you can, borrow a friend’s DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera, or look into purchasing your own. Once you switch to a DSLR, you’ll wonder how you ever managed to get by without it. The picture quality is substantially better, and there is absolutely no delay. The Cheeto photo was taken with a Nikon D3000 (look for similar cameras dirt cheap on Amazon), and I can assure you that I never got photos like that with my dinky little handheld digital camera. Modern DSLRs often come with HD video capabilities too, and they will get you high quality video and photos all in one device.
4
Patience is a Virtue
With pets, you have to be willing to wait for that perfect picture. Be willing to experiment. Sit on the floor, move around your pet. Give him or her something to eat or play with. Let them come over and investigate you and your camera. If you know your pets pretty well, you can usually predict what they will and won’t react to. For Cheeto, if I say his name enough, he will respond to me by meowing, and that’s how I got this shot. Use your knowledge of your pet’s behavior to your advantage.
Another great tip that’s been recommended to me is to always have your camera nearby. Whether it’s sitting out on the coffee table or ready and waiting on a bookshelf, if you can just grab it and shoot the second your pet does something photo-worthy, you better results more frequently.

James & Amanda’s Wedding

I love shooting weddings and this was my friend Amanda’s wedding. She wanted someone to do pre wedding photography. (It didn’t stop me taking photos afterwards).
Her wedding was down in the south towards Bowral, and she prepared in a beautiful old country house full of vintage things.

Trick photos with children
These digital photos are software edited, similar to old film-camera multiple exposure technique. Nowadays trick photography becomes easier with computer software than they used to be. As a result it doesn’t make much fun. But being a photographer, I just remember my early days of film-camera trick photography with these new digital DSLR photos.
